Ellis
Coat of Arms
Those of the name Ellison in Ireland are given largely to be families of English descent. The works of Woulfe may differ from this, but we have no records to indicate otherwise. The family is found here in Ireland from the 17th century onward. The 19th century birth index places the family in counties Antrim and Down. Several families of the name can be found in and around Belfast in modern times .....

Background: Probably a contraction of Ap Harry, the son of Harry. In the Welsh it also signifies ready, prepared, equal, like; Para, endurance, one capable of enduring. The name may be local, from Parys, a mountain in Wales, so called from parhous, inexhaustible (mines); or Pres, brass, copper, ore.

Motto: Tu ne cede malis, Yield not to misfortunes. Arms: A fesse, between three lozenges azure within a bordure of hte last. Crest: Three battle-axes, erect, ppr.. View the Heraldry Dictionary for help.
Surname dictionaries indicate that the origin of the surname is Welsh, derived from the patronymic system where the phrase 'ap Harry', meaning 'son of Harry', became combined to form the one word 'Parry'. Published pedigrees (often unproven) support this in that they start from family lines whose names change each generation, leading to someone called Harry, whose descendants then take the Parry surname.
Famous Parry's:
Blanche Parry - lady in waiting to Queen Elizabeth I
Caleb Hillier Parry - British physician
Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry - English Composer
Sir William Edward Parry - English Rear Admiral and arctic explorer
Name Variations: Parry, Parrey, Parrie.
